“Ring, Ring. Hello. Hey, Judy, this is Suzie. How are you doing? I’m good. How are you, Suzie? Well, I just put a cake in the oven and need your advice on how long to let it bake”. When you overhear them talking and interacting, perhaps by themselves, it’s more than just cute – it’s what carries over into their adult life. I’m sure you remember the TV show “Friends”. Or, maybe, you remember the song “You’ve Got A Friend” by James Taylor. While both of those are great examples of the importance of friends and friendship, let’s add one more to the list from Melissa and Doug puzzles called Circle of Friends Cardboard Jigsaw.

As you can see in the picture, the friends from this puzzle represent fourteen different nations. As nice as friends are, what benefits, if any, would there be for children working with puzzles? As a matter fact, there are several skills learned for early childhood development including: physical, cognitive, emotional.

Hey, what did you just call me? Now, before you get all upset and think I’ve said something to rock the boat, go back to your childhood days and remember Lucy calling Charlie Brown a blockhead. In case you’re wondering how the idea of building blocks began, a German educator named Friedrich Froebel, who also developed the concept of kindergarten, invented them because he believed that the children’s toys of the day were inferior for properly teaching children and cultivating their minds.
